The method involves detecting a distance to an object (9) e.g. post, according to a pulse echo method by rear and front sensors (3, 5) e.g. ultrasound sensors. A signal (7) is transmitted by the sensors. An echo (11), which is reflected by the object, of the signal is received. A distance to the object is determined from a run time between transmission of the signal and reception of the echo. Recording of measurement values is stopped, and a new signal is transmitted after reception of the echo. The recording is continued for detecting a flutter echo after reception of the echo. An independent claim is also included for a device for detection of an environment of a motor car.
