PURPOSE: A liquid crystal display is provided to prevent a thick alignment layer from being formed in a recess part by connecting the recess part to the lateral part of a columnar spacer. CONSTITUTION: A columnar spacer(210) is formed in an opposite substrate(200). A pedestal(120) is formed in a part corresponding to the columnar spacer of a TFT substrate(100). A convex part(211) and a concave part(212) are prepared in the front end of the columnar spacer. The pedestal is formed corresponds to the recess part. The end of the recess part is opened. The recess part is connected to the sidewall of the columnar spacer.
