The mechanism has a friction element that is secured to a rotating unit (3) and another friction element that is arranged integral with a shaft (1). The shaft is axially displaced in a disengaged position. An annular magnetic track is arranged interdependent of shaft, and another annular magnetic track is arranged interdependent of a bearing. The tracks are placed axially face to face for inducing a magnetic pull that is sufficient to place the shaft in a coupled position. The tracks provide guidance for rotation of shaft in a housing. An independent claim is also included for a water pump.
