860,517. Cutting grooves in sheet materials. CHAMBON Ltd. Nov. 18, 1959 [Aug. 18, 1958], No. 26486/58. Class 31 (1). Apparatus for forming V-shaped grooves in a web 1 of carton material comprises sets of inclined circular knives 2a and 3a to 2d and 3d supported by backing rollers 6, 7. Disposed in the rear of the sets of knives are sets of rollers 4a and 5a to 4d and 5d supported by backing rollers 8, 9. The material is fed by draw rollers 10, 11, the upper roller 10 having circumferential grooves 12a to 12d. The rollers 4a to 5d are driven at a peripheral speed less than that of the draw rollers so that they exert a rubbing action on the grooves formed in the material. The backing rollers are driven at a peripheral speed equal to that of the draw rollers. The angle of inclination of the axis of each knife to the plane normal to the direction of feed of the material at the cutting position is preferably within the range of from 4 to 15 degrees. The angle included between the faces of the V-shaped peripheral portion of (a) each knife is preferably within the range of from 20 to 60 degrees, and (b) each roller 4a to 5d is preferably within the range of from 80 to 120 degrees. Means are provided for adjusting the vertical positions of the knives and of the rollers 4a to 5d. Means are also provided for raising the knives and the rollers 4a to 5d from the operative to the inoperative positions. The rollers 4a to 5d may be formed by ribs on cylinders. The backing rollers 6 to 9 may be replaced by a single roller in which case the feeding means may comprise one or more endless belts arranged to pass round part of the circumference of the backing roller.
