A valve construction, such as a butterfly valve, comprises a valve body member 10 having flow passages 11, 12, a valve member 16, a resilient seal ring 39 located in an annular recess 47 in one of the members, and comprising a base portion 43a, 43b compressed within the bottom of the recess and flexible side wall portions 41a, 41b joined by a curved end wall portion 41c, the base and wall portions enclosing a space 51, the curved wall portion being engaged by a working surface of the other member of the valve. As shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the seal ring, which may be of a synthetic material, such as nylon or neoprene, is formed with enlarged portions 43a, 43b so that, when the ring is compressed into the recess 47, it is firmly retained therein and completely seals the space 51; the mating faces 47a, 47b may be corrugated or one provided with a tongue for engagement in a groove in the other in order to prevent relative movement. In operation, working fluid flows into either of spaces 49a, 49b depending upon the direction of flow, and forces the ring into firm contact with the opposite side of the recess and the closure member, as shown in Fig. 4. In order to prevent undue distortion of the ring, the space 51 may be filled with a liquid, such as water or glycerine, or a core of natural or synthetic rubber. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 11, applied to a gate valve, the ring is located in a groove formed by the housing and a threaded ring 142, the edges of the groove being provided with lips 144, 147 in order to prevent extrusion of the seal ring. In a modification, the lips may be replaced by a pair of Belleville washers 154, 155, Fig. 13, which serve to support the seal ring and also to scrape the closure member to remove dirt. The sealing ring arrangement may be also applied to a rotary spherical or rotary cylindrical valve.
