Textile fibres are softened by treatment with a composition comprising (1) one or more quaternary ammonium salts of the general formula: <FORM:0842842/IV (c)/1> where R, R1 and R11 are alkyl groups, which may be the same or different, R111 is an alkyl, aralkyl or hydroxyalkyl group, X is an organic or inorganic anion and n is an integer from 1 to 4, and (2) one or more water-insoluble fatty acid alkanolamides. The molar ratio of quaternary ammonium salt to fatty acid alkanolamide is preferably from 1 : 5 to 5 : 1. The alkanolamides are preferably ethanolamides or iso propanolamides prepared by reacting the corresponding alkanolamines with fatty acids containing 8-22 carbon atoms, preferably stearic acid. The quaternary ammonium salts are preferably prepared by reacting fatty acids containing 8-22 carbon atoms with dialkylamino alkylamines, e.g. dimethylamino-propylamine, followed by quaternisation with benzyl chloride, dimethyl sulphate or methyl chloride. The composition may be prepared either by adding the fatty acid alkanolamide in the molten state to a concentrated solution of the quaternary ammonium salt, or directly by simultaneously reacting one or more fatty acids with a mixture of dialkylamino alkylamine and alkanolamine followed by quaternisation of the dialkylamino alkylamide. Specified fibres are cuprammonium and viscose rayon, "Perlon" (Registered Trade Mark) and cotton, Perlon stockings treated with the compositions separate smoothly from the former and show a smooth, full hand. |
