In a single or multistage activated sludge process in which the sewage to be purified is drawn from the clarifying tank to a height above that of the sewage level 10 by propeller 5 and distributer pipes 7. During its free fall the liquid is atomized and aerated by horizontal impact with spokes 4. In Fig. 3 (not shown), the free fall may be in an immersion bell which allows the process to take place below normal sewage level.
