PURPOSE: A portable terminal executing and selecting a specific function by controlling the operation of a mouse pointer through iris recognition and a method thereof are provided to perform a specific function of a portable terminal by generating a mouse pointer through the iris recognition. CONSTITUTION: An iris photographing unit(100) photographs an iris of a user to generate an image frame. An iris position detecting unit(200) compares a pixel value of the image frame with a position value of the iris to extract a coordinate value of the iris. A pointer generating unit(300) determines the position value of the iris as a position value of a mouse pointer. A pointer control unit(400) controls the operation of the mouse pointer in responses to the position value of the iris. A memory unit(500) stores the position value of the iris set to extract the position value of the mouse pointer.
