<p>[Problem] To provide an epoxy resin composition containing phenol novolak resin (more specifically, a phenol-naphthol novolak resin) and epoxy resin, with which it is possible to markedly improve the heat resistance and combustion resistances of articles obtained by curing the resin composition. Also, to provide a phenol novolak resin suitable for use in said epoxy resin composition. [Solution] A phenol novolak resin comprising the chemical structure represented by general formula (a) below.
