C2-10a -olefins are polymerized by contact with an inert liquid hydrocarbon and a catalyst prepared by contacting a titanium trihalide (e.g., TiCl3) with a tertiary amine, optionally ageing the mixture so formed and thereafter adding an aluminium tri-C1-10-alkyl (e.g. AlEt3). Examples describe the polymerization of 4-methylpentene-1 and propylene; other monomers specified are ethylene, butene-1, 3-methyl- and 3:3-dimethylbutene-1, 3-methyl-, 3:4-dimethyl and 4:4-diethyl-pentene-1, hexene-1, 3:5-dimethylhexene-1, heptene-1, 3:5:6-trimethylheptene-1, octene-1, decene-1, 1:3-butadiene, 1:4-pentadiene and styrene. The amine has the formula R1R2R3N wherein not more than one of the R groups is methyl and each R group is a C1-8 alkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl hydrocarbon radical; Et3N is preferred, but other amines are mentioned. Hydrochloric and oxalic acids and methanol may be used in quenching the reaction and purifying the polymer.
