PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide: a polarizing film which has high polarization performance and is thin and useful for a display device component; and the like.

SOLUTION: A polarizing film is provided which includes a composition containing: at least one kind of polyazo-based dye material represented by the specified general formula (1) and having absorption in the wavelength range of 400-800 nm; and a polymerizable smectic liquid crystal compound. In the formula (1), Ar2is selected from the groups specified in the figure. Also provided are a liquid crystal display device and the like comprising the polarizing film. The polymerizable smectic liquid crystal compound is preferably a compound which exhibits a liquid crystalline state in a high-order smectic phase.
