A translation device that comprises a plurality of input/output units. The translation device specifies a type of communication to be used by each of the input/output units; and, when either of the input/output units acquires a message, detects the specified type of communication for the input/output unit, translates the message from the specified type of communication to the other specified type of communication, and outputs the translated message to the input/output unit corresponding to the other specified type of communication.
