Provided is an optical fiber fusion splicing method with which it is possible to observe the entirety of an optical fiber end face and detect fractures or hackles, remove the fractures or hackles, and fusion splice the end faces of the optical fibers. An optical fiber fusion splicing method of fusion splicing end faces of a pair of optical fibers (1, 3) captures, with image capture means (23, 25, 27) which are positioned facing end faces (1a, 3a) of the optical fibers, the end faces of the optical fibers from the fronts thereof, electrically discharges on the end faces of the optical fibers which have fractures or hackles which are detected with a detection means, and thereafter fusion splices the end faces of both of the optical fibers.
