The grinding chamber 36 of an apparatus for grinding silica sand, salt, pigment &c., comprises two end walls 40, 41 and a ring-shaped side wall 32 which has means for admitting a plurality of angularly-spaced streams of gas under pressure into the outer portion of the chamber, an inlet 70 formed in the end wall 41 for material to be ground, means 75 adjacent the inlet to cause such material to be directed radially outwardly in the chamber under pressure, and an outlet 13 in the end wall 41 for the ground material. The means 75 is in the form of a circular plate secured to the end wall 40 and spaced therefrom by ribs 90 to provide a nozzle. Surrounding the side wall is a steam chest 21 which is provided with an inlet 20 and plugs 27 for gaining access to jets 30 which are screwed into a ring 31. Material fed into a hopper 15 is entrained by steam directed through a Venturi 61 and, on entering the chamber, is directed radially to come under the action of the jets 30. The particles of material impact against one another under a vortex action produced by the jets, the larger particles being carried outwardly by centrifugal force and the finer particles drifting inwardly until they are withdrawn at the outlet 13. In a modification, the flow directing means 75 is in the form of a flat plate disposed between an inlet tube and the outlet, and, in another modification, the inlet tube extends into the chamber and is provided with radially-extending openings around its circumference. |
