PURPOSE: A motor control system and a method thereof are provided to prevent unnecessary energy loss generated during a stop by controlling excitation currents of a motor according to the stop condition of an electric vehicle. CONSTITUTION: A motor control system includes a vehicle speed calculation part(110), a pedal detection part(120), a gear shift detection part(130), a VCU(Vehicle Control Unit)(140), an MCU(Motor Control Unit)(150), and a motor(160). The vehicle speed calculation part calculates the speed of a vehicle from the number of revolutions of the motor and delivers to the VCU. The pedal detection part detects a brake pedal actuation signal inputted from a driver and delivers to the VCU. The gear shift detection part detects the position of a shift lever and delivers to the VCU. If the electric vehicle is stopped, the VCU controls the MCU to cut off the supply of excitation currents to the motor.
