<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic EL element that can suppress deterioration in performance even after heat treatment. <P>SOLUTION: An organic EL element comprises: a pair of electrodes; a light-emitting layer formed between the pair of electrodes; and an electron transportation layer formed between one of the pair of electrodes and the light-emitting layer. In the organic EL element, the electron transportation layer contains alkali metal or alkaline earth metal, or metal salt thereof, and a diffusion prevention layer for preventing the diffusion of a metal ion of the electron transportation layer to the light-emitting layer is formed at a position of the electron transportation layer that is adjacent to the light-emitting layer side.
