Embodiments of the invention provide methods and apparatus for designing and performing seismic surveys wherein a desired region is identified and a plurality of generally curved advancing sail paths of a seismic spread over the desired region are determined. The generally curved advancing sail paths have a radius that is a function of a width of the marine seismic spread, a desired coverage fold for the desired region, or combinations thereof.
