The present invention relates to a novel process for the optical purification of enantiomerically enriched 2-(pyridinylmethylsulphinyl)- 1 H-benzimidazole compounds and their pharmaceutically acceptable salts of Formula 1 wherein R1 to R4 may be selected from H, linear or branched (1-4 C) alkyl, linear or branched (1-4 C) alkoxy, aryl, aryloxy and their halo or alkoxy substituted analogs useful as proton pump inhibitors (PPI). Particularly, the present invention provides an improved optical purification of enantiomerically enriched preparation of Esomeprazole and pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof.
