Determining the coordinates of a helicopter (e.g. using GPS 310, Fig.3); accessing an obstacle coordinate database (320, Fig.3) to determine a set of obstacles near the helicopter coordinates; scanning a surrounding electromagnetic field for a power line (e.g. using electromagnetic radiation sensor 330, Fig.3); and displaying the power line on a visual display 340, Fig.3. The display may represent relative positions of the power line and helicopter when they are within a predetermined distance, e.g. within a TAWS. The power line representation (e.g. its colour, flash status, font or graphic) may be modified when the sensor detects electromagnetic radiation associated there-with and its coordinates are found in the database. The sensor may detect an 50-60 hertz AC signal. A variable audible alarm may sound as the helicopter approaches the power line. The display may be deactivated when the helicopter exceeds an altitude threshold.
