A motor vehicle locking device, such that key 13 may only be withdrawn when the vehicle brake is applied and the ignition switched off, comprises a box 11 containing a handbrake cable 17 and plunger 25 operated by lever 18, hydraulic brake and clutch cylinders 15, 16 with plungers 29, 33, a slider 22 with a tongue 45 which engages a catch 44 inside the lid of the box and portions which engage slots 26, 30, 34 in plungers 25, 29, 33 to hold the handbrake engaged and render the foot brake and clutch inoperative and a cam 20 rotation of which, controlled by rod 19, moves the slider 22. Rod 19 is extensible (see Fig. 3) and forms an extension of axially slidable barrel 36 of combined lock and ignition switch 12. A lost motion connection 41, Fig. 2, between rod 19 and base 40 of cam 20 permits limited rotation of key 13 and barrel 36 to switch the ignition on and off without rotation of the cam. Further rotation anti-clockwise of barrel 36 and hence cam 20 to move slider 22 is prevented by stop 39 engaging portion 37 of the rod 19 unless the barrel is first slid axially into lock 12, and the handbrake must be applied before slider 22 will enter slot 26 in plunger 25. The key may only be withdrawn when the barrel is pushed into the lock and rotated into the handbrake locked position. A spring 24 ensures that the handbrake lever 18 must be pulled before the slider may be moved to the unlocked position by providing an end force on plunger 25. A spring loaded pin 46 may be provided on the slider 22 to engage the steering shaft 47 when the handbrake is locked. |
