A geolocation data acquisition system and method (400, Figure 4) for acquiring communication session data from a mobile radio communications network. A data extraction module 222, 226 extracts call session data continuously from a network of call processors 224, 228, each call processor supporting mobile communication units in an associated geographical region of the coverage area of the mobile radio communications network. The data extraction module provides the extracted data to one of several storage areas 260. In each storage area, a record is created of the communication session data for each call made within the coverage area of an associated set of call processors. The records stored in each storage area 260 comprise the data available for all communication sessions in the geographical region associated with the corresponding set of call processors 224, 228. The data extraction modules may comprise network probes connected to a Radio Network Controller (RNC) (322, Figure 3), or an external probe which taps into the flow of communication session data at the location of the RNC 222, or a network probe integrated into the base station, or a network probe which captures session data flowing between the RNC and Operational Support Subsystem. The data extraction modules/network probes may provide the session data continuously 24/7 to allow preemptive identification of network faults from the data stored in the storage devices 260. In a further embodiment a subset of data stored in the storage system may be stored in a second (cache) storage device in conjunction with database server 280 for each session record, this data may also comprise derived geo-location and/or Quality of Service (QoS) information for that record. The second storage device may be used in response to a Quality of Service or fault query (440, Figure 4), for example, for network diagnosis/analysis.
