PURPOSE: A relay having an offset compensating function and an offset compensating method thereof are provided to compensate an offset component generated while converting an optical input signal which becomes a reference point for determining an arc element into an electric signal, thereby rapidly and exactly determining whether an arc occurs or not. CONSTITUTION: A relay(100) includes an optical input unit(110), a signal converting unit(120), an amplifying unit(130), an inversing and time delaying unit(140), a unifying unit(150), a comparing unit(180), and an output unit(190). The optical input unit composed of a photo diode receives an optical signal. The signal converting unit converts an inputted optical signal into an electric signal. The amplifying unit amplifies a converted signal. The inversing and time delaying unit inverses an amplified signal and applies a fixed time delay. The unifying unit unifies the amplified signal from the amplifying unit and an inversed and time delayed signal from the inversing and time delaying unit. The comparing unit compares a unified signal from the unifying unit with an operation reference value(170). The output unit determines whether an arc occurs or not based on a comparison result from the comparing unit.
