PURPOSE: A composition and a health functional food containing cytochalasin b for preventing and treating cancer are provided to induce cancer cell apoptosis. CONSTITUTION: A composition for preventing and treating cancer contains cytochalasin b of chemical formula 1, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt, an optical isomer, or a polymorph thereof as an active ingredient. The cancer includes uterine cervix cancer, colon cancer, anal cancer, esophageal cancer, pancreatic cancer, stomach cancer, kidney cancer, tongue cancer, oral cancer, skin cancer, uterine cancer, breast cancer, lymph gland cancer, thyroid cancer, prostate cancer, liver cancer, leukemia, skin cancer, colon carcinoma, brain tumor, bladder cancer, ovarian cancer, or gallbladder cancer. The composition induces cancer cell apoptosis. The composition suppresses DNA synthesis, generates early cell apoptosis, and causes oxidative stress. A health functional food for preventing and treating cancer contains the composition and a sitologically acceptable food additive. The health functional food is manufactured in the form of a powder, a granule, a tablet, a capsule, a pill, a suspension, an emulsion, and a syrup.
