Component protection for a multi-level commutator

The commutator arrangement (1) has a commutator circuit (7) for initializing an intermediate voltage, where a direct current converter (15) is assigned to the commutator circuit. The direct current converter is provided for generating the variable output voltages by display of different converter voltages. A control unit (2) is formed, in order to close all circuit breakers (21,24) or to open all circuit breakers by the identification of a failure. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a commutator arrangement.
