REMOTE WIRELESS CONTROL OF A WELL SHUT IN VALVE

A remote handheld radio controller may be used to actuate a shut-in valve when dangerous and hazardous wellhead emergencies prevent approach to the well to activate the manual emergency shut in valve 9. A release valve in the form of a wireless control panel 20 with antenna 24 and vent tube 23 is remotely wirelessly controlled by a remote handheld radio controller (40, Fig 3) to vent hydraulic pressure from control tubing 8 connected to a normally-closed sub surface shut-in valve 10 and allow the shut-in valve 10 to close. A plurality of remote devices, each comprising a wireless transmitter compatible with a wireless interface having a unique identifier, transmit control instructions including the unique identifier to the wireless interface which ignores control instructions containing an identifier differing from the unique identifier. The wireless interface may transmit hydraulic fluid pressure data from a pressure sensor, allowing users to confirm that the shut-in valve has operated.
