The device has a shift lock housing (10) blocking movement of a gear selection lever (1) in absence of a support (24) on a footbrake pedal of a vehicle. A retractable lever (20) drives the housing out of a locking position of the gear selection lever in presence of the support on the pedal of the vehicle to allow releasing of movement of the lever. An electromagnet (15) is controlled by the support on the brake pedals to move from the locking position movement of the lever to a position in which movement of the lever is released. A metal plate (25) is located opposite to the electromagnet. An independent claim is also included for a car.
