Diazacyclopropane derivatives are prepared by the discontinuous or continuous treatment of a carbonyl compound in liquid phase at a temperature of -50 DEG C. to +100 DEG C. with ammonia and chlorine, under elevated pressure if required, using a volume ratio of ammonia to chlorine of 4: 1 to 50: 1 according to the parent Specification, the reaction being carried out in liquefied ammonia as the solvent. The reaction temperature must therefore always be lower than the boiling point of the liquid ammonia at the reaction pressure. Examples are given of the preparation of 3-methyl-3-ethyl-diazacyclopropane and 3,3-dimethyl-diazacyclopropane. |
