The member 14 is made from a flexible plastic material, the lower side of the material having a number of parallel ribs 32 extending longitudinally such that re entrant channels 34 are defined between the ribs. The channels are curved in a direction perpendicular to the direction of the ribs. Preferably the member is made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and has an edge of a different highlighter colour. The channels may be substantially dovetail shaped. The member may be a portion of synthetic flooring or the member may be an insert for a stair nosing 10. The channels allow the ingress of adhesive 44 of glue, such as a modified silicon polymer adhesive to enhance the bonding between the member and the surface it is to be attached to. Several members may be welded together to form a floor. The nosing may incorporate a tread and a riser portion and a recess for accepting the inlayed insert.
