<PICT:0951347/C3/1> Metal strip is marked, e.g. with a pattern, by passing the strip over the insulated cover perforated to form a pattern, which surrounds a hollow cylindrical roll, supplied with an electrolyte which seeps through feed channels to the outer surface of the roll and cover by capillary action, the strip being the anode and the roll the cathode. The surface of the roll shown has perforations 40 through which electrolyte flows to circumferential grooves 42 formed on the face of the roll in each of which resides a ring of felt 44 acting as a "wick", through which electrolyte percolates to the perforated plastic sleeve 46 on which the strip is pressed. Electrolyte is fed through a hollow axle into the roll body, which may be mounted over a pickling tank through which the strip passes over sink rolls. The patterned strip may then be tin-plated, with subsequent removal of the plate over the pattern, and lacquered. |
