A chip (2) has a well (4) having a diameter of, for example, approximately 1 mm. The depth of the well (4) is, for example, approximately 300 mum. A matrix (8) comprising a coating of collagen gel is placed on the bottom of the well (4), and a bone fragment (10) is placed on top of matrix (8). Osteoclasts are placed between the matrix (8) and the bone fragment (10). The osteoclasts are differentiated from bone marrow cells within the well (4) and induced to below the bone fragment (10).
