<p>PURPOSE: An apparatus for inputting texts in a portable terminal and a method thereof are provided to reduce the control number of key buttons and required time by sensing double touches for a text key button or a number key button. CONSTITUTION: A touch screen(104) generates a touch signal by sensing a touch for a number key button and a text key button by displaying the number key button and the text key button in a text input mode. When the touch for the text key button and the number key button is sensed through the touch signal, a control unit(100) determines a text assigned to the text key button based on a number assigned to the touched number key button. Texts assigned to one text key button have a serial sequence, and the control unit determines text orders corresponding to the number assigned to the touched number key button.
