<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a drive method of an electrophoretic display device for effectively suppressing generation of an afterimage without increasing power consumption by effecting a backup display operation, when the probability of inducing an afterimage is high although the DC balance is maintained. <P>SOLUTION: The drive method is applied to an electrophoretic display device including: a display unit, which has an electrophoretic element containing electrophoretic particles held between a pair of substrates and comprises pixels that can display at least a first color and a second color; pixel electrodes corresponding to the pixels, formed between one of the substrates and the electrophoretic element; and a common electrode opposing to the plurality of pixel electrodes, formed between the other substrate and the electrophoretic element. The drive method includes an image update step S6 of updating a displayed image in the display unit from a first image to a second image; and a backup display step S4 of displaying a backup display image prior to the image update step.
