Sealing means for a pump or other rotary shaft comprises a sealing unit 8 slidably mounted on the shaft and two generally similar sub-assemblies 9, 10 one on each side of the unit 8 and each comprising a seating element 18 which is supported in sealing engagement with the unit by a carrier ring 17 itself supported by a spacer 15, 19 extending between the carrier ring and an end member 6, 2a. The sub-assembly 9 is secured to the pump housing 1 and sealed thereto by a gasket 11 and engages a carbon sealing ring 8a of unit 8 whilst the subassembly 10 engages a carbon sealing ring 8b of unit 8 and rotates with the shaft and is sealed thereto by a gasket 12 compressed between a part 25 of spacer 19 and a shoulder 13 on the shaft. The spacers 15, 19 have portions 16, 27 telescoped in and welded to portions of the carrier rings 17. Tapered surfaces on the elements 18 engage complementary tapered walls 30 of the rings 17. The sealing unit 8 is of the type described in Specification 884,073. The spacers and carrier rings may be of stainless steel. The seating elements may be of stainless steel, ceramic, carbon, hard rubber, nylon or P.T.F.E. and in the latter case, may be reinforced by a stainless steel insert ring.
