[Also in Division G1] Apparatus for sorting articles by weight comprises a plurality of balances 4, 5, 6 and 7 which are set to respond to progressively decreasing weight values and are arranged in separate troughs of an undulating feed path 10, paddle wheels 15, 16, 17, 18 being provided above the balances to urge the articles in succession along the undulating path 10, each article on reaching that balance which responds to its weight being directed from the undulating path to a weight classification path associated with that balance. Each balance which may comprise a recessed pan 8 and a counterweight 9 is arranged on being tilted by an article, to direct the article via a forked gripper 36 to an endless conveyer having a succession of rollers and forming a classification path. Locking devices 38 controlled by linkages 39, 40 which are connected to a drive shaft 22 for the paddle wheels prevent the balances from performing a weighing operation except when they support an article. An electric motor 26 may be drivingly connected to the drive shaft 22 through chains 23, 24 and gearing 25 and may be arranged to drive the endless conveyers forming the classification paths through a chain connection 27.
