1,207,055. Mattresses. W. P. ACKERMANN. 12 Jan., 1968 [9 Feb., 1967], No. 1962/68. Heading A4M. A mattress has a central region of adjustable hardness and comprises three layers a, b, c defining between them two pockets A, B into either of which is fitted a non-resilient plate 4, e.g. of cardboard, plywood or hard synthetic resin, the pockets A, B extending over the greater part of the width and substantially half the length of the mattress. The plate 4 may have a foamed rubber or plastics covering of different thickness or hardness on one or both faces. The plate 4 is shorter than the pockets A, B so that it is displaceable longitudinally of the mattress. The pockets A, B may be closed by a sliding clasp fastener at one side of the mattress. Alternatively, the pockets may be accessible through one or both major faces of the mattress, padded lids secured by sliding clasp fasteners being provided to close the pockets. An upwardly convex pad 7 may be disposed above the plate 4 and may be secured to it. The centre of the plate 4 may have an opening 5 which may be covered on both sides by an elastic membrane. The mattress padding may comprise horse hair which may be vulcanised, cotton, foamed rubber or foamed plastics. |
