PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect a medium that cannot be detected by a sensor for detecting both side parts of the medium conveyed on a conveyance path.

SOLUTION: This detection device includes: a light emitting part emitting light crossing at a predetermined position on a conveyance path for conveying a sheet-like medium from one side of the conveyance path; and a light receiving part receiving the light from the light emitting part at the other side. The detection device detects whether at least a portion of the medium is present on the conveyance path on the basis of a light receiving amount obtained by receiving the light emitted from the light emitting part by the light receiving part before the conveyance of the medium is started.
