Apparatus for transferring indicia from a web 80 carrying two rows of indicia on to an article such as a bottle having a longitudinal axis and two peripheral portions (s), (s<SP>1</SP>), Fig. 3 (not shown), of differing radial extent comprises means 3-12 for feeding the web past a transfer station at which is located an applicator device for transferring the indicia to the portions of the article, and a knife 17 in advance of the said station for splitting the web into two ribbons. The applicator device is formed by two rollers (23), (24), Fig. 3 (not shown), of differing diameter each designed to transfer indicia from one row on to one of the peripheral portions under heat and pressure. Articles are presented in turn to the station by a rotatable turret 25. Guide means downstream of the station guide the ribbons in edge-to-edge relationship to a take-up reel 2. The roller (23) is mounted in a support which may be pivoted to adjust the angle of the axis of the roller (23) with respect to that of the roller (24). The roller (23) may also be adjusted vertically. The applicator is movable from an operative position in which it presses the ribbons against the article to a retracted position in which the ribbons extend across the station in straight paths between guide means. The web or ribbons are heated by a heater 14, a heated shoe-shaped block (31), Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown), and by the rollers (23), (24). An oscillated bar 59 controls the web feed and ensures that there is no slippage between the article and the web &c. |
