PURPOSE: A lighting device using visible light communications synchronized to AC(Alternating Current) power and a lighting method thereof are provided to receive a visible light signal while a lamp is turned off, thereby preventing lowering the detection of the visible light signal and the accuracy of the detection. CONSTITUTION: An electric power converting unit(100) converts an AC power source to a DC(Direct Current) power source and supplies the converted power source to a driving unit(500). An AC synchronous signal detection unit(200) detects a voltage signal determined in a zero crossing section. A synchronous signal range determining unit(300) determines the range of an AC synchronous signal based on the voltage signal detected by the AC synchronous signal detection unit. A control unit(400) generates a control signal about the change of the lighting frequency of a light emitting module(900) in a section corresponding to the range of the AC synchronous signal. The driving unit changes the lighting frequency of the light emitting module according to the control signal generated by the control unit. A visible light signal receiving unit(800) receives a visible light signal from an adjacent light emitting module. A noise removal unit(700) removes noise in the visible light signal received by the visible light signal receiving unit.
