PURPOSE: A device for searching a point of interest(POI) by using a sensor and a method thereof are provided to enable a user to input a search word through various input units and to perform a simple operation with a portable terminal, thereby easily obtaining POI information corresponding to the search word. CONSTITUTION: A location search unit(263) searches the current location of a device through a GPS. A sensing unit(230) senses a direction and acceleration of the movement of the device. A distance conversion unit(261) determines a scale of a digital map displayed by the direction and the acceleration of the movement. A direction setting unit(262) determines a direction of the digital map displayed by the direction of the movement. A map generation unit(265) generates the digital map corresponding to the scale and the direction determined by the distance conversion unit and the direction setting unit based on the location searched from the location search unit.
