<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a steering gear which is configured to specify in advance a portion to be destroyed first in a cross joint and its peripheral parts (middle shaft), and to enable a failure mode that allows a vehicle to travel for a predetermined time after a failure occurs, and to provide the cross joint. <P>SOLUTION: The steering gear 1 comprises the middle shaft 5 on the side of a steering member 2, a pinion shaft 7 on the side of a steering wheel 11, and the cross joint 6 which connects the middle shaft 5 with the pinion shaft 7 in a plane surface crossing each of the shafts in a relatively rotatable manner. The steering wheel 11 is steered when a steering torque of the steering member 2 is transmitted from the middle shaft 5 to the pinion shaft 7.
