A mold clamping device for a blow molding apparatus comprises a forward/backward moving mechanism (20) for moving base disks (21, 22), which support mold halves (3a, 3b), respectively, toward and away from each other, first locking members (51) disposed each on either side of one base disk, second locking members (52) disposed each on either side of the other base disk and adapted to engage/disengage the first locking members (51), and a mold clamping and driving mechanism (40) by which these locking members are moved toward and away from each other and the locking members, which are engaged upon mold closure, are pulled and driven in a direction to clamp the mold halves. Since the locking members (51, 52) are pulled during engagement thereof, rapid opening/closing operation and high mold clamping force for the mold can be attained so as to perform reliable mold clamping. |
