TIGHTLY-COUPLED GPS AND DEAD RECKONING VEHICLE NAVIGATION WITH ROAD MAP CORRECTION FEEDBACK

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide road map correction feedback for tightly coupling a global positioning system (GPS) and dead reckoning (DR) in a vehicle.

SOLUTION: A tightly-coupled GPS and dead reckoning vehicle navigation with road map correction feedback collect wheel speed transducer data over a vehicle network to compute vehicle range and direction. A database of road segments that match current navigation solutions is provided in road maps in DVD disks. The dead reckoning bridges over gaps in navigation solutions that occur when GPS signal transmission is lost in tunnels, parking lots, and other common situations. A road map fitting control controls drift that accumulates when only the dead reckoning operates for a long time.
