<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a novel cyclopentenone useful for producing benzindene prostaglandin. <P>SOLUTION: There are provided a method for producing a racemic cyclopentenone represented by formula I by which a protected 3-hydroxyphenylacetate shown by formula V and furan are reacted to form 2-acylfuran represented by formula IV, the acylfuran and a reducing agent are then reacted to form a furan carbinol represented by formula III and the furan carbinol is rearranged and isomerized to form a racemic cyclopentenone represented by formula I, and a method for producing an optically active cyclopentenone by which the racemic body is divided by using lipase.
