A superconductor magnet coil comprises a plurality of superconductor winding layers separated from one another by distance pieces which define coolant channels between alternate layers, the thicknesses of the distance pieces being in the range 0À1 to 0À2 mm. As shown, Fig. 1, the coil comprises a plurality of layers 2 of a superconductive wire or strip, stabilized with a layer of a normal metal and coated with a 10 Á thick electrically insulating layer to prevent short circuits between adjacent layers, wound on an antimagnetic steel former 1 from which it is insulated by a plastics foil 5. Alternate pairs of layers 2 are separated by distance pieces 3 leaving channels 4 for coolant flow through the coil. The thickness of each distance piece is in the range of 0À1 to 0À2 mm. which is considerably less than the minimum spacing of 0À5 to 0À6 mm. between the layers which was previously thought to be necessary to prevent film boiling of the coolant occurring. Where they are not separated by distance pieces the adjacent layers are insulated by thin solid insulating foils (6). The superconductor material may be NbTi to which Cu is metallurgically applied, Nb 3 Sn coated with Cu or Ag or NbZr coated with Cu.
