1282643 Refrigerating AIR PRODUCTS & CHEMICALS Inc 28 July 1969 [15 Aug 1968] 37683/69 Heading F4H [Also in Division F1] In a refrigeration process, e.g. for producing liquified nitrogen, initially warm gas is fed through a line 17 and a compressor 15 into a compressor 11, the flow of pressurized gas therefrom being divided into two streams for separate, cooling passage through heat exchangers 21, 23, and turbine expanders 12, 13, mounted respectively at either end of a common shaft 14 with the compressor 11 therebetween. The resultant production of energy due to expansion provides the total energy requirement of the compressor 11. The expanded and cool gas from turbine 12 passes via line 26 through the heat exchanger 23 for cooling the second portion of gas before recirculation. The gas from the turbine 13 passes partially through a heat exchanger 40 for recirculation through a line 42, or through a line 43 to the heat exchanger 23, or through a line 45 to a heat exchanger 32 wherein a third stream of air from the compressor after passage through heat exchanger 23 is further cooled before liquefaction in a column 49.
