In a spatially diverse wireless video communication system comprising multiple antennas and multiple transmission paths (P0-P3, ie. NP = 4), a video data unit 400 comprising K data blocks 401 (B1..K where K = a subset NP of available paths having a SNR above a threshold) are Reed-Solomon encoded into N encoded blocks (where N>K) via an error correction block code C(n,k) having minimum distance d, which incorporates redundancy blocks R1..K. At least N-d+1 encoded blocks are thus sent over at least one path (ie. NP-M paths where M<N is the number of blocked paths). Each block B comprises L symbols (sn,1..L), and block code C transforms k data symbols into n coded symbols at block code rate (k/n), with dmax=n-k+1.Wide or narrow directional beam combinations can be constructed using selectors (421, fig. 4a) and weighting coefficients 431. Frequency (FDM) and/or time (TDM) diversity may also be employed.
