1339499 Universal joints GKN TRANSMISSIONS Ltd 22 March 1972 [31 March 1971] 8348/71 Heading F2U A method of fitting replacement needlebearing cups to the yokes of a single or double Hooke's joint, particularly on a motor-vehicle propeller shaft, of the kind in which the cups are retained by staking the yoke-bore to provide a number (eight) of circumferentially spaced abutments, comprises counterboring the yoke bore to remove the stakes and form a datum surface e.g. shoulder 22, Fig. 2, determined by the existing bearing cup 9, withdrawal of the existing cup 9; inserting the replacement cup 26, Fig. 3, and staking the bore to provide cup-retaining abutments 29 positioned with reference to the datum surface 22. A base washer 30, separate or welded to the cup, registers with the shoulder 22 and may be inwardly curved at its outer periphery. During the staking operation an adjustable caliper (65, Fig. 6, not shown) prestresses the yoke-arms outwards to prevent inward deflection. A tool for performing the above operations is in the form of a pedestal press, Fig. 6, not shown, the lower anvil of which has a spigot to engage the lower bore of one yoke and an adjustable lateral extension to support the attached propeller shaft, whilst the upper limb of the press is bored to receive either a hand or power driven face cutter for the counterboring, or a hammerdriven press-tool for the staking. Axial load for the counterbore cutter is provided by a dead weight (40a) on a lever arm (40), and the counterbore depth is limited by engagement of the cutter with the hardened base of the existing cup, or by a spring-loaded feeler. |
