The method involves supplying air and fuel to a fuel cell (3) to perform starting process, where the fuel cell is provided with a cathode chamber (5) and an anode chamber (4). Exhaust air from the cathode chamber is stored in a storage device i.e. reservoir, during operation of a fuel cell system (1). The exhaust air from the storage device is supplied to the anode chamber during starting of the fuel cell, where the fuel is supplied together with the stored air to the anode chamber. The stored air is supplied to the fuel cell during the start-up phase. The fuel cells are designed as polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cells. An independent claim is also included for a fuel cell system.
