PURPOSE:To manufacture a contact lens having excellent transmittance of visible rays and good fitting properties, by molding copolymers which consist of (metha)acrylate units having sugar in the side chain and hydrophilic monomers. CONSTITUTION:After four hydroxyl groups among five hydroxyl groups possessed by sugars (e.g. D-galactose), are subustituted with an isopropylidene group, (metha)acrylate units are introduced into residual one of hydroxyl groups and then (metha)acrylate (A) having sugar in the side chain is obtained. Next, 5- 80wt% (A) component and 95-20wt% (B) hydrophilic monomer (e.g. 2-hydroxy- ethylmethacrylate) are copolymerized in the presence of a radical initiator. After this copolymer is molded into a contact lens form, it is immersed into aq. acid soln. (e.g. hydrogen chrloride, formic acid) and an isopropylidene group in the copolymer is subustituted with hydroxyl group to convert it to hydrophilic group. |
