<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem in an MMCC-DSCC that, to prevent a power semiconductor element from getting broken down by overcurrent arising from an accident, etc. in a power system, it is necessary to use a power semiconductor element having larger current tolerance than ever for protection against overcurrent, which, however, results in an increased body size of a power conversion apparatus. <P>SOLUTION: A power conversion apparatus is composed of a plurality of arms, each having a plurality of unit converters cascaded thereto, which are star or delta connected or connected in a bridge form.
